At Home Parties: Movie Night with the Kids

Do you need a fun family activity that doesn’t require much work? How about one that can also keep the kids occupied for a little bit during the day as they get it ready? Well I have something that will do both of those things: an at-home movie night!

This isn’t just any movie night. We wanted to do something that will make you feel like you’re actually in the movie theatre, and also get the kids involved. So, without further ado, here is how to throw the perfect movie night at home:

Step One: Choose a Movie

Let’s avoid any conflict that could happen, shall we? Let each child write down their top two movie choices and put them into a hat and then you blindly choose one! Takes the fighting right out of it because it’s random.

Step Two: Print the Tickets

This is one way that will make the kids feel like they are out at a movie theatre. Print out our movie ticket template and let the kids fill them out! They can write in the title, name, and date, and even decorate them! They can also be the “ticket-takers” later on right before the movie starts. This is a fun craft and gets them involved.

Step Three: Get the “Theater” Ready

Bring on the pillows! This is the funnest part. Use the pillows and blankets to make individual areas/seats around the room so that each person has their own space. Make sure each one has a flat space, like a tray or small table, to hold all the snacks and a drink! If the kids are involved in the setup, it will make them excited about the activity. They might actually sit still and watch the entire movie, too.

Step Four: The Snacks (Shocker, I know)

It’s not a movie night without popcorn. Let’s take it to another level and make a whole popcorn bar! Get some candies and snacks to add into it like M&M’s, peanuts, chocolate chips, cinnamon/sugar, or chili powder/cayenne pepper to give it a little spice! Everyone gets to create their own customized mix.

Step Five: Set the Scene

Throw those PJ’s on and get ready to watch! This is yet another situation where I used a chalkboard and wrote the title of the move for an easy decoration idea. You can even let the kids decorate it and add pictures. Want more signs? Make one for the snack area too!

And there you have it! I am always looking for ways to shake things up and get out of the quarantine blues. My family has been doing these movie nights weekly and it has been a big hit! We even try to theme our dinner to the movie too (like making dino nuggets when we watched Jurassic Park lol). We hope you try and enjoy this as much as us!

Happy Watching!
