Calligraphy & Hand Lettering for Party Invitations

We are all going through a lot right now and need things to keep us busy! You may have had to postpone weddings and other events that you were excited for, which is really tough. Trust us, we’re sad too. But because we all have a little extra time on our hands, let’s learn some skills that can help take our future parties to the next level!

Whether you’re planning a shower, a b-day party or a wedding, invitations are an important aspect of any occasion. I’ve been starting to learn how to do beginner calligraphy and hand lettering in order to make the perfect personalized invitations. Here is what I’ve learned so far!

How to learn:

I’ve been using these books to get ideas. They have exercises to practice simple hand lettering and calligraphy all the way to SUPER in depth designs. No matter what your skill level, they will help you learn! These are the ones I have been using:

There are also some great Youtube channels that are helpful as well! It's nice because you can pause them and go at your own pace. Here are some links to a few good ones:

How to Hand Letter:

Honestly, the best way to learn is to practice, practice, practice. Which is what I did. Here are some of my creations!

Tips from me:

Use what you have at home first (before you go buy a bunch of stuff)

Just start with a blank piece of card stock and a pencil, it can be as simple as that! Depending on what other crafting supplies you have available to you, you can add other elements! I love watercolor and decided to use that to add some details.

Be patient

If I’ve learned anything by trying to do calligraphy and hand lettering it is that it’s a lot harder than It looks. Try not to get discouraged and try things in pencil first so you can fix any mistakes!

Try your own designs

When practicing, it can be hard to break out and try your own designs. But play around!! Try some block lettering, some cursive, throw in a little extra pizazz and you’re sure to come up with something unique and amazing!

If you're more of a digital person, try using Procreate!

Procreate is an app for your iPhone or iPad (there are other apps for android) that lets you create these masterpieces electronically.

I recently downloaded the app and have been playing around with it and it is SO fun. It takes a second to get used to, but you truly could design anything your heart desires. It does cost $9.99 on the app store... but I think it's totally worth it!

If you are looking to pick up a new hobby or are just bored out of your mind during self-isolation, try making some party invitations! Who knows, you might love it!

Stay safe and healthy out there,
