During the summer, there is nothing better than spending a day at the lake. In Utah, we are so lucky to have easy access to lots of lakes and reservoirs, so obviously Kim and I had to take advantage of it and throw a party.
So, grab your bathing suit and take notes, because we’ve got all the essentials you NEED to have the perfect party at the lake. Between the food, the favors, and even the more practical items like bug spray, it’s safe to say that this will be THE party of the century. Or, at least the summer.
Let’s start with the most essential item(s), Food.
Snacks are a must when you are spending the day at a lake. Being in the sun, swimming, and running around can work up quite the appetite. Your guests will be oh-so grateful when they discover a yummy snack as hungry creeps up on them.
A make your own trail mix station is the perfect snack for a long day outdoors. It’s healthy, tasty, and inexpensive. All you need are some of your favorite trail mix items, bags, and bowls/scoops for the display! For our trail-mix, we like a mix of sweet and salty, and we try to keep in mind our friends that may have nut allergies.
Another fun snack idea for a lake day is “worms in dirt”. Crush up some Oreos and top with one (or many) gummy worms. The kids will love it.
As much as we love snacks, a day on the lake also requires a hearty meal to feed those hungry guests. Our favorite? Chili! It’s so filling, and a great option when you are feeding a crowd. Get creative with the toppings and try Fritos, cheese, or greek yogurt! Chili is also a great make ahead meal to save you time day-of.
Don't forget the cornbread!
It is also essential to have lots of drinks available all day. Hydration is key, baby. We recommend being eco-friendly and providing your guests with reusable water bottles that they can refill. You can also customize them with names to avoid confusion. We felt like we were on Love Island and we were not mad about it.
In addition to the customized water bottles, we also had some other fun favors for our guests to use throughout the day. We made lake day survival kits with sunscreen, bug spray, chapstick, tissues, a mini first aid kit, and Dramamine (essential for our "sea-sick" friends if you are going to be boating).
We threw it all in fun colored fanny packs, and there was extra room for people to put their phones, sunglasses, etc.
Because we couldn’t get enough of the customized things, we also had towels and hats with each person’s name.
Both the hats and the towels were no more than $5 each, and we put the names on ourselves. If you don’t have an embroidery machine, fabric markers or iron-on paper are both great options!
Good music is also very essential for a day on the lake. Put together a fun playlist and grab your favorite bluetooth (waterproof) speaker!
Spending the day with Mother Nature is always a good idea, and we hope that our essentials help make it the best lake day party ever! You and your friends are going to have a blast.
