You may have noticed that Kim and I spend a lot of our “free” time at thrift stores. Besides our love for (and addiction to) thrifting, there is actually a method behind our madness. When we go thrift shopping, 99% of the time we are looking for party decor. And, I know what you are thinking, is there even anything worth buying for my party at thrift stores? The answer is DUH. And I’m here to tell you about it.
There are so many reasons why you should thrift your party decor instead of buying it new. I think we can all agree that the events industry hasn’t always been known for being eco-friendly. Most people purchase decor for a one time use, and then get rid of it. And, where do you think it ends up? Either in thrift stores or the landfill. Thrifting will also save you a lot of money, and, it’s fun! What more could you want? That’s right, nothing.
So, what exactly should you be looking for when you are thrifting decorations? Don’t worry, we aren’t going to send you in blind and watch you wander around hopelessly. Here is our list of go-to things to thrift when we are planning a party:
I believe that you should always have some good vases on hand, but when you do need more, thrift them. Once you get them, all you have to do is take the stickers off and wash them! If you wanted to get a little more crafty, you could also paint them or add ribbons. Overall, vases are a very low-maintenance thrifting purchase.
Another item that there are an abundance of at the thrift stores. Baskets are great to hold party favors, cards, display food, or put flowers in. The range from $.25 to about $5.00, which is significantly less than buying them new.
Wood for Signs, Chalkboards, etc.
I have talked about my love for chalkboards multiple times, so I’ll keep this short. Signs are a very easy and cute addition to any event with any theme. We love to look for wood at the thrift stores to paint or turn into chalkboards, and you can usually find some fun shapes and sizes that are unique.
Trays, cute bowls, fancy pitchers...we want it all. Chances are you might already have some you can use, but when you want a specific theme or color, thrifting is the way to go. Thrift stores have SO many food and drink displays that will take any party to the next level. Plus, then you can reuse them instead of getting disposable items.
We love to look for things at the thrift stores that we can use for favors. Our go-to item is cute mugs or jars that you can fill with candy and treats. You could even use some of the matching vases you found earlier and give out cute floral arrangements for your favor. The possibilities are endless!
This one is obvious, but, I thought I would say it anyway. It’s no secret that Kim and I LOVE thrifting our party outfits, especially when we have to fit into a specific theme. Plus, there is a smaller chance (and I mean so small it’s almost impossible) that no one will be wearing the same thing as you.
Some of our favorite thrift stores to go to in the Salt Lake area are: Deseret Industries, The Other Side Thrift Boutique, Goodwill, and Savers. Let us know some of your favorite thrift stores and finds! We want pics.
